Chapter 25
In the month I spent with Master Liang, my throwing arts became more a natural part of me than I could have imagined possible. I could put the spikes and sharpened coins and rocks from my sling anywhere I wanted, but not nearly as fast and powerfully as he could. Neither could I throw four spikes at once into four distinct moving targets. If I had not seen him do it with my own eyes, I would not have believed it possible. Moving targets were still a bit difficult for me, even one at a time. But if an enemy were to stop for a second, I could sink a spike deep into him. Of that I was confident. In addition to the increase of my physical skills, I had gained a measure of peace that had eluded me for years. For that alone, I could not have been more grateful.
The five great virtues had become so anchored to my fingers, that I couldn't touch a spike without being overwhelmed with a deep inner sense of the moral considerations that go along with them. There had been a time in my life when I might have feared such considerations would prove cumbersome distractions in battle. I would have thought they would slow me down. But, in time, I found that they cleared the head of confusion, fear and doubt when right decisions had to be made in split seconds. And that clearing of the mind gave rise to the steadiness I had always wanted, even if only in a vague way until the Master pointed out its importance. What had once seemed backward and impossible to me became the only thing that was forward and true. The world had become a very different place, and it was beautiful, as long as I kept my eyes on the beauty.
Dagger met me in the warehouse on my first evening back in Paigen. Kick and Stalker were with him. I had just finished practicing and changed into a dry tunic and leggings.
Stalker spoke up first, "Hey, Hoof. Good to see ya back. I hope you haven't forgotten everything."
"A bit rusty," I said, "but not forgotten. How are you guys doing? How are Spear and Saber? I asked Doctor Liang about them several times, but he acted like he didn't know a thing."
"He doesn't," Dagger said. "They are being held in seclusion while they heal. Rumor has it neither of them may ever be able to teach again."
"What?" I said. "Why? Because of their injuries?"
He nodded and said, "But at least we're all alive, thanks to you."
Stalker added, "And at war because of you. Cage and his friends have been screaming for our heads, especially yours. The east sector of the city is crawling with enemy spies. And now the government is sniffing around. There are purple sashes everywhere."
"Imperial Guardsmen?" I asked.
Dagger nodded, saying, "Every purple sash is lined with eyes and ears. We have to be careful. Guardsmen are no joke.
